Reggaetón Project
I am writing a general interest book on reggaetón, a contemporary commercial music genre with Caribbean roots that has grown to have global impact. This book is an outgrowth of my dissertation research on the origins and creators of country, hip-hop, and reggaetón.
Reggaetón: A Surprising Story of Migration and Empowerment will be published in 2027 by publisher Rowman and Littlefield (recently acquired by Bloomsbury Publishing).
Interviews
Are you an artist, producer, songwriter, deejay, or manager working in reggaetón? I am recruiting music industry professionals who work or have worked in the Latin music industry, specifically in the genre of reggaetón. Interviews run 60 minutes and are conducted via Zoom.

My book will include interviews with a variety of voices, professional roles, and different communities and backgrounds. The book will explore:
- Reggaetón's past, present, and future,
- The influence of music and cultures throughout the Caribbean and the Americas, and
- Controversial topics around race, color, gender, sexuality, the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and reggaetón's reputation.
My Background
I am an arts educator, performing artist, writer, and music lover! I grew up listening to all types of music, from R&B to salsa to opera, and I've been a fan of reggaetón since the late 1990s. While attending a music conservatory, I found so few books about the music I liked to listen and dance to. My professors actively discouraged me from researching contemporary music. Now as an educator, I work with my students to create an inclusive learning environment. I develop curricula and teach courses that connect to the music my students listen to and love. In my teaching, I incorporate Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy and explore a diverse range of music traditions, from contemporary commercial music to Western European art music, with emphasis on lyric theater and hybrid music genres within the African diaspora. My writing projects embody my teaching philosophy and work in the classroom. Writing on music and pedagogy is a natural extension of my teaching, lecturing, and curriculum writing. My first published writing came out in October 2023 when I contributed a chapter in the book, “Engaging Pedagogies for Diverse Learners" published by Rowman & Littlefield Education. The chapter explores a college-level music curriculum I wrote, which guides students through a storytelling and songwriting project for social change. |
