Performing Artist
Hailed by the Star Tribune for singing with “dignity, beauty, and power,” African American mezzo-soprano Dr. Ilah Raleigh is a culture bearer dedicated to telling new stories through song. Her 20-year career spans the Minnesota Opera and Washington National Opera. Trained in Milan, Italy, under Giulietta Simionato, she strategically expands the vocal canon through cultural representation—notably through contemporary premieres and curated recitals of African American art song. She remains a sophisticated lyric artist committed to blending vocal excellence with the preservation of cultural truths.
Dr. Ilah Raleigh is a published author and interdisciplinary scholar who bridges classical traditions with contemporary global genres to engage modern audiences. Her forthcoming book with Bloomsbury Publishing, Reggaetón: A Surprising Story of Migration and Empowerment (Spring 2027), explores the genre's lineage as a tool for cultural empowerment.
Combining her Doctor of Education with research into Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, she designs innovative curricula and delivers keynotes that examine the arts as a vital tool for social justice and community leadership.
